It is also great for letting your dog out to do his business when you are in an unfamiliar environments, for dog agility and general leash training. It can also help with reactive dogs to keep them under control and prevent the dog-to-dog reaction before it happens. Last but not least, if your dog outweighs you and is very powerful, then a slip leash might be the safest walking set up for you.
